Marquetry

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003540

A decorative craft involving the creation of intricate pictures or patterns by fitting together precisely cut pieces of wood veneer, shell, or other thin materials. The assembled design is then glued as a single sheet onto a substrate, such as a piece of furniture or a panel. Unlike inlay, where recesses are carved into a solid surface to receive the pieces, marquetry creates the full decorative surface separately before application.
