A type of intricate marquetry involving the inlay of tortoiseshell and metal, typically brass or pewter, into a wooden furniture surface. The technique involves cutting the inlay materials and the veneer simultaneously from a stacked packet, allowing for the creation of two opposite patterns: the primary piece (première partie) and its counterpart (contrepartie). This decorative art form is named after the French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle, who perfected it during the reign of Louis XIV.
