A type of intricate marquetry, also known as Boulle work, involving inlaying materials such as tortoiseshell and metal, typically brass or pewter. The technique involves stacking and cutting two contrasting sheets of material simultaneously, allowing for the creation of two opposite designs from a single operation. One design, the première-partie, features a brass pattern on a tortoiseshell ground, while the contre-partie has a tortoiseshell pattern on a brass ground.
