Boulework
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000716
A type of decorative inlay or marquetry using tortoiseshell and thin, intricately cut pieces of metal, typically brass, pewter, or silver. The materials are cut simultaneously from a stacked sandwich, allowing for the creation of two contrasting panels: one with a metal design on a tortoiseshell ground (première-partie) and its opposite (contre-partie). This technique, perfected by André-Charles Boulle in the 17th century, is used to adorn high-end furniture and decorative objects.
