Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003106

A finishing process that produces a hard, durable, black lacquer-like surface on wood or metal. The technique involves applying multiple coats of a special asphaltum-based varnish, with each layer being heat-dried in an oven before the next is applied. This method, originating as a European imitation of East Asian lacquerware, was historically used on tool handles, hardware, and decorative furniture to provide a protective and glossy finish.
