The standard international unit of time, defined by the International System of Units (SI) as the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom. This atomic definition provides a highly stable and precise reference for all time measurements. It is the base unit for frequency and other time-dependent quantities.
