Apportionment

The process of dividing a loss or expense among multiple insurers or parties responsible for the coverage. This occurs when more than one policy covers the same loss, or when liability is shared among several entities. Methods of apportionment include pro rata, contribution by equal shares, or contribution by limits, as specified in the policy language.
