Auction rate security (ARS)

A debt instrument with a long-term maturity but whose interest rate is reset periodically through a Dutch auction process. These securities were designed to provide liquidity through regular interest rate adjustments, typically every 7, 28, or 35 days. The market for ARS largely collapsed in 2008.
