Cession

The act of transferring all or part of an insurance risk from a ceding insurer to a reinsurer. This process allows the primary insurer to reduce its exposure to large losses and stabilize its underwriting results. Cession can be done on a facultative basis, for individual risks, or on a treaty basis, covering a portfolio of risks.
