To transfer all or part of an insurance risk from a primary insurer (the ceding company) to a reinsurer. This process allows the ceding company to reduce its exposure to large losses, stabilize its underwriting results, and increase its capacity to write more business. The reinsurer assumes a portion of the risk in exchange for a share of the premium.
