Surplus share

The portion of a risk that a reinsurer assumes in a surplus reinsurance treaty, representing the amount exceeding the ceding insurer's retention limit. This share is expressed as a percentage or a multiple of the ceding insurer's retention. The reinsurer receives a proportional share of the premium and pays a proportional share of the losses for this portion of the risk.
