The chief regulatory official of a state's insurance department, responsible for overseeing the insurance industry within that jurisdiction. The commissioner enforces insurance laws, approves policy forms and rates, licenses insurers and agents, and protects policyholders. This position is often appointed by the governor or elected by the public.
