North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)

A standard used by federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the business economy of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It categorizes businesses based on their primary activity, assigning a six-digit code. This system replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system in 1997.
