Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)

A system used by the U.S. government to classify businesses by industry for statistical purposes. This classification aids insurers in assessing risk profiles and setting appropriate premiums for different types of commercial operations. The SIC system has largely been replaced by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
