Qualified self-insurer

An employer that has been approved by a state's workers' compensation authority to directly pay for its own workers' compensation claims, rather than purchasing a policy from an insurance carrier. To qualify, an employer must demonstrate sufficient financial strength and administrative capacity to manage claims. They typically post a bond or provide other security.
