Qualifying event

A specific occurrence that triggers a group health plan participant's right to elect temporary continuation of their health coverage under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). For an employee, such events include termination of employment for reasons other than gross misconduct or a reduction in work hours. For spouses and dependent children, qualifying events also include the employee's death, divorce or legal separation from the employee, or a dependent child ceasing to be a dependent.
