A certificate of financial responsibility required by some state motor vehicle departments for drivers who have committed certain traffic offenses, such as driving under the influence or causing an accident while uninsured. It proves that the driver has the minimum required auto liability insurance coverage. An SR-22 is typically required for a period of three to five years.
