A risk classification for an applicant or property that has a greater-than-average potential for loss, making it ineligible for standard insurance rates. Factors for this classification in personal auto insurance include a poor driving record, multiple accidents, or a high-performance vehicle. Insurers charge a higher premium for substandard risks or may decline to offer coverage altogether.
