Impaired risk

An individual or entity that presents a higher-than-average probability of loss due to existing health conditions, hazardous occupations, or other adverse factors. Insurers assess these factors during underwriting to determine eligibility and appropriate premium rates. Life insurance policies often classify impaired risks into substandard rating classes.
