Impaired physicians exclusion

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001769

An exclusion in a physician's professional liability policy for any claim arising out of, or made worse by, the insured physician's use of alcohol or drugs. It removes cover for care given while impaired, not for ordinary clinical errors by a physician who is fit to practice. One specimen policy words it broadly, so a claim in which substance use merely aggravated the harm also falls outside the cover.
