Independent practice association IPA

An organization of independent physicians who contract with health maintenance organizations (HMOs) or other managed care plans to provide services to their members. Physicians maintain their private practices while participating in the IPA for administrative and contracting purposes. This structure offers patients a broader choice of providers than a staff model HMO.
