Independent medical examination IME

A medical evaluation of an individual conducted by a neutral, third-party physician to resolve questions about their medical condition, typically in the context of a workers' compensation, disability, or personal injury claim. The independent medical examination (IME) is requested by an insurer or employer to obtain an impartial opinion on the cause, extent, and treatment of an injury or illness. The examining physician does not treat the individual but instead provides a detailed report answering specific legal and medical questions posed by the referring party.
