Patient dumping

The illegal practice of refusing to treat or transferring indigent or uninsured patients from one hospital to another, often based on their inability to pay or lack of insurance coverage. This practice is prohibited by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) in the United States. EMTALA requires hospitals to provide a medical screening examination and stabilizing treatment regardless of a patient's ability to pay.
