Variable interest entity (VIE)

A legal entity that lacks sufficient equity investment at risk to finance its activities without additional subordinated financial support, or whose equity investors lack certain decision-making rights or obligations. Under accounting standards, a company that controls a VIE must consolidate the VIE's financial statements. This structure is often used in international business for regulatory or legal reasons.
