Amicus

A person or organization, not a party to a case, who volunteers or is invited by the court to offer information, expertise, or insight that has a bearing on the issues. This advice is presented in a legal brief, known as an amicus curiae brief, which means "friend of the court." The U.S. Supreme Court's rules require that such a brief must identify the interest of the amicus curiae and state the source of its authority to file.
