Autocracy

A system of government where supreme power is concentrated in the hands of one person, whose decisions are not subject to external legal restraints or regularized mechanisms of popular control. The ruler holds absolute authority, often claiming a divine right or inheriting power. This form of governance contrasts sharply with democracies, where power is distributed and subject to checks and balances.
