Binding precedent

A legal principle or rule established in a previous court case that a lower court must follow when deciding subsequent cases with similar facts or legal issues. This doctrine, known as stare decisis, promotes consistency and predictability in the legal system. Decisions from higher courts within the same jurisdiction create binding precedent.
