Authority

The body of law, including statutes, regulations, and prior court decisions (precedent), that a court relies upon to justify its legal reasoning and rulings. Authority is categorized as either mandatory (binding) or persuasive. A lower court is bound by the mandatory authority of higher courts within its jurisdiction, whereas persuasive authority from other jurisdictions can be considered but is not controlling.
