Primary authority

The law itself, as found in constitutions, statutes, court opinions and administrative regulations. Primary authority is mandatory when it comes from a controlling jurisdiction and a higher court, and merely persuasive when it comes from another jurisdiction. It contrasts with secondary authority, such as treatises and law review articles, which only explains or comments on the law.
