Persuasive authority

Sources of law or legal reasoning that a court may consult for guidance but is not obligated to follow when making a decision. This includes court decisions from other jurisdictions, legal treatises, law review articles, and dissenting opinions. Unlike mandatory authority, which a court must apply, persuasive authority is used to influence or support a judicial ruling when no binding precedent exists.
