Obiter dicta

Statements made by a judge in a legal opinion that are not necessary to the decision of the case. These are observations or remarks that do not form part of the binding precedent, or ratio decidendi, of the case. While not legally binding, obiter dicta can sometimes influence future judicial reasoning or provide persuasive authority.
