A federal law, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, that allows certain former employees, retirees, spouses, former spouses, and dependent children to temporarily continue health coverage at group rates. This coverage is available when health benefits would otherwise be lost due to specific qualifying events, such as job loss or divorce. Individuals typically pay the full premium plus an administrative fee.
