Decriminalization

The legislative process of reducing or removing criminal penalties for certain acts or behaviors, making them legal or subject only to civil penalties like fines, rather than imprisonment. This differs from legalization, which makes an act entirely lawful. Decriminalization often applies to minor offenses such as certain drug possession or traffic infractions.
