Face amount

The nominal value or stated value of a financial instrument, such as a bond, insurance policy, or promissory note, as printed on the document itself. This amount represents the principal sum to be paid at maturity or the death benefit of an insurance policy. It may differ from the market value or actual cash value of the instrument.
