Par value

The nominal or face value assigned to a share of stock or a bond by the issuing corporation or government. For stock, it is a minimum price below which shares cannot be originally issued, though it rarely reflects the market price. For bonds, it represents the principal amount that the issuer will repay at maturity, typically $1,000.
