Insider trading

The illegal practice of buying or selling a public company's stock by individuals who have access to material, non-public information about the company. This information provides an unfair advantage, allowing the insider to profit or avoid losses before the information becomes public. Insider trading is prohibited by the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and enforced by the SEC.
