Itemized deductions

Specific expenses that taxpayers can subtract from their adjusted gross income to reduce their taxable income, rather than taking the standard deduction. These deductions include medical expenses, state and local taxes, and home mortgage interest. Taxpayers choose to itemize if their total itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction amount.
