Municipal bonds

Debt securities issued by state and local governments or their agencies to finance public projects such as schools, roads, or hospitals. Investors who purchase these bonds lend money to the municipality in exchange for regular interest payments and the return of the principal at maturity. The interest earned on municipal bonds is often exempt from federal income tax and sometimes from state and local taxes.
