Petition

A formal written request submitted to a court or other official body, initiating a legal action or asking for a specific ruling or order. The person filing the document is known as the petitioner, and the document itself outlines the facts, the legal basis for the request, and the remedy sought. Common examples include a petition for divorce, a petition for bankruptcy, or a petition for a writ of habeas corpus.
A formal application in writing made to a court or other official body requesting judicial action of some character. See also: “bankruptcy petition.”
