A legal memorandum filed with a motion, the standard name for it in California courts, that sets out the facts, the governing law, and argument supported by citations to statutes and case law. It is filed with the notice of motion, and a court may treat a missing memorandum as grounds to deny the motion. California Rules of Court rule 3.1113 caps most opening memoranda at 15 pages.
