Self-employment tax

A tax consisting of Social Security and Medicare taxes primarily for individuals who work for themselves. This tax is similar to the FICA taxes withheld from the pay of most wage earners. The self-employment tax rate is 15.3% on net earnings from self-employment, up to certain income thresholds, as determined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
