Statehood (international law)

The condition of being a sovereign entity recognized under international law, possessing a defined territory, a permanent population, an effective government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. The Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States outlines these criteria. Recognition by other states is often a practical, though not strictly legal, requirement.
