Subrogation

The legal right of an insurer to pursue a third party that caused an insurance loss to the insured. This allows the insurer to recover the amount it paid out on a claim from the responsible party. It prevents the insured from recovering twice for the same loss, once from the insurer and once from the at-fault party.
