The highest judicial body within a particular jurisdiction, serving as the court of last resort. It typically hears appeals from lower courts and its decisions are binding on all other courts in that jurisdiction. The United States Supreme Court, for example, consists of nine justices and has final appellate jurisdiction over all federal court cases and state court cases involving issues of federal law.
