An information system of interlinked hypertext documents and other resources, each identified by a URL, that users retrieve over the Internet with a browser using the HTTP protocol. Tim Berners-Lee proposed it at CERN in 1989, and it is only one of the services that run on the Internet, alongside email and file transfer. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 created a notice-and-takedown system for infringing material hosted on websites.
