  1. The season of the year that follows summer and precedes winter, characterized by decreasing temperatures, falling leaves in deciduous trees, and shorter daylight hours. In the Northern Hemisphere, it typically runs from the autumnal equinox around September 22 to the winter solstice around December 21. It is also known as fall.

  2. The season of the year that is the transition period from summer to winter, occurring as the sun approaches the winter solstice. Meteorological autumn (different from standard/astronomical autumn) begins September 1 and ends November 30.
