Backwater

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003777

The body of water in a river or stream where the water level is raised above its normal level due to a downstream obstruction, constriction, or the influence of a larger water body it is joining. This effect can extend many kilometers upstream from its cause, slowing the current and increasing the potential for flooding in the affected reach. Backwater effects are a primary consideration in hydrometeorological flood forecasting and the engineering of bridges and dams.
