Backwash

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010392

The seaward flow of water down a beach face following the breaking of a wave. This return flow is driven by gravity and the momentum of the receding water, often carrying sediment back into the surf zone. Its strength depends on the wave energy and the slope and permeability of the beach.
