Surf
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009425
The breaking of ocean waves as they approach a coastline, caused by the shoaling of water that increases wave height and steepness until the wave crest becomes unstable. This process dissipates wave energy and creates the turbulent, foamy water characteristic of shorelines. The height and intensity of surf are influenced by wave period, offshore depth, and beach slope.
