Shoaling
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008849
The process by which ocean waves encounter decreasing water depth as they approach a coastline or shallow area. This reduction in depth causes the waves to slow down, increase in height, and decrease in wavelength. Shoaling is a fundamental mechanism that transforms deep-water waves into breaking waves near the shore.
